At Holy Name Primary School we view reading as a vital part of the school curriculum that impacts on all learning. We want children to enjoy reading a wide range of different books and be able to talk about books and authors.
In Foundation and Key Stage 1 we teach synthetic phonics and use these schemes:
- Oxford Reading Tree Floppy’s Phonics
- Oxford Songbirds
- Dandelion Launchers
- Collins Big Cat
Each daily session of phonics gives the children the opportunity to revisit their previous experience, be taught new skills and to practise and apply what they have learned.
In Key Stage 2, as their reading develops, children are encouraged to read from a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books. Weekly guided reading sessions using Oxford Project X help to motivate and inspire. All children take books home to read with an adult, which helps them to practise their reading skills and develop a love of reading.
